First thing this morning, we went down to the main part of town to the Museum of Alaskan History.. VERY interesting and it is FREE! This wonderful Carving is made of a Female Mammoth tusk.. If the plaque is large enough for you to see, it was carved by a Gentleman named Eddie Lee.. It took him over 2 years to carve this. I sure wish it would SHOW the details of the carving - AMAZING is all I can say... BTW: It IS for Sale... $52,500.00 Worth!!!!!!
Only 1 cruise ship in town today, so you could have shot a CANNON down the middle of the street first thing in the morning!!!
A bit later in the afternoon, it got just a BIT more crowded...
We had lunch at the Red Onion, a SUPER lunch .... AND a Glass of Alaskan Amber! YUM! (Root beer for Den.....)
Later in the day, we went out to see the whales.... and the scenery on the way to "Smuggler's Cove".. BEAUTIFUL!
One part of the cove, great place for a bbq or just sitting........
Slightly to the left of center is one of the 'blows'.. the local folks that we met told us about this place, EASY to hike to, to watch the Mother and calf playing in the bay.
Another inlet. Just WONDERFUL to see the waves crashing on the rocks...
And off in the distance, the snow capped mountains near sunset... and the helicopter pad -there are 6 "Million dollar helicopters" in this fleet, to take folks out to see the glaciers and other scenery.. 15 minutes for $119.00............
One of the 4 cruise ships that were in the port today - this one was just backing out of the dock area as we were watching the sun set behind the mountain.
Backed out and turned and sat there for about 25 minutes, as the passengers watched the whales playing and breaching in the bay!
Downtown Skagway at 9:00 P.M.
Dinner tonight at Skagway Brewery - GREAT sandwiches and my Alaskan Beer - this time it was "Skagway Brewing Company - Blue Top Porter".. Very smooth, creamy, gutsy beer! LOVE IT!!!!!
So, tonight we say "Good Night" to Skagway, and tomorrow we will be headed up to Whitehorse again for maybe 2 or 3 days.... Need to get groceries in at the Walmart or Safeway, and Den wants to change oil and all the "guy stuff"... I will probably read or watch the CABLE!!!!!! LOL!
Good night all!.
Sure hate to leave these wonderful folks here... All of the locals are SO sweet and helpful! When I mentioned to one that we were needing some groceries, she told me where the IGA grocery store was and that the townsfolk were HOPING that the Boat would be coming on time this week as they only get the shipment once a WEEK.... I assured her that we would wait till we get to Whitehorse for our needs.. and not "clean out" their store in town here... This sweet girl was SO appreciative of that simple thing... If the shipment of groceries does not come on time, they have no choice but to drive to Whitehorse 112 miles for their needs..... We take such things for granted where we live...10 minutes to the grocery store and it's unlimited supplies of WHATEVER we are looking for or needing..... This BEAUTIFUL mountain area is very remote, when you get down to the bare facts..... Be thankful for our conveniences... We keep a very well stocked pantry in the camper, and only once a week, or every 2 weeks we need to go for groceries...
More in a few days - after Whitehorse we will head down to the Cassiar Highway and HOPING to see the bears catching Salmon!!!!
TO BE CONTINUED!!!!!!
